Assessing Fashion At The Emmy Awards
September 19, 2011 by Fashion Is Politics
The only thing more exciting than knowing which nominees will become award winners is wondering who is going to make the “best” and “worst” lists for their fashion choices. It continues to boggle my mind that so many A-list celebrities still wear some of the most atrocious designs I have ever seen. I hate to say it, but it makes you wonder why these rich and famous starlets don’t hire a stylist, and if they have one, what the hell was going through said stylist’s mind at the time. On the contrary, some stars looked absolutely stunning in their gowns and everything from head to toe was utterly perfect. Let’s take a moment and honor those who actually give a damn about what they’re wearing. My top three choices for best dressed celebrities are Nina Dobrev, Kelly Osbourne, and Heidi Klum.
Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan. Look out, Red Carpet fashion at its finest! Nina rocks the red right out of this dress. The sweetheart neckline with the layered hemline on this curvaceous number makes her look like a goddess. It's simple with some flare at the bottom and it's not too much so that it's swallowing her small frame. So lovely!
Kelly Osbourne in J. Mendel. Who would have thought that Kelly Osbourne would ever look so incredibly stunning?! She looks amazing in this burgundy crimson mermaid-style gown. The strap placements and the shape of the dress is to-die-for on her. This is going to be a knock-out color for the season. She looks amazing.
Heidi Klum in Christian Siriano. She looks fashion-forward and straight off the runway. I think it's a classy move to represent a former "Project Runway" winner's piece. I love the skirt of the dress, the shoes, and this color against her skin tone.
As for the other end of the fashion continuum, my top three choices for worst looks at the Emmy Awards goes to Christina Hendricks, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Katie Holmes.
Christina Hendricks in Johanna Johnson. This washed-out number gives no mercy to her fair skin tone and fiery locks. A curvy woman like this should know how to play up her curves in a tasteful manner, not exploit them for all they're worth. It's cleavage-baring and very shapeless. The overall look cries for too much attention. Shame on her stylist!
Gwyneth Paltrow in Pucci. Let's face it; no one looks good in a two-piece "dress". This semi-translucent Indian-inspired piece was all wrong for this kind of event. It cuts her in half and makes her look boxy and just completely unflatters her entire body. This is horrible on so many levels. I would also like to see her do something a little more edgy and different with her look. She always looks the same to me, with drab, straight locks and simple makeup. She needs to pump up the volume a bit.
Katie Holmes in Calvin Klein. This ill-fitting, too-casual dress makes her look frumpy and does nothing for her figure at all. Her hair is an absolute mess and the look lacks elegance overall. Not to mention that horribly placed waist-belt.
