For school I had to research a famed couture designer and I decided to choose Elsa Schiaparelli. I’ve heard of her but hadn’t known as much about her prior to my research for my paper. She’s actually a very innovative, creative, and smart woman who made a name and business for herself in the earlier part of the century. She’s best known for her eccentric, flamboyant, and even downright different approaches to making a fashion statement that’s both feasible for everyday wear but bold enough to stand out a bit from the crowd. Elsa is an Italian couture designer who mainly resided in Paris, France. She was one of the first to use animal prints, shoulder pads, the hot pink hue, or as she interpreted it, “shocking pink”, and also one of the first to dye zippers to match the fabric it was attached to. She’s also well-known for her black knit sweaters and famous yet controversial “lobster dress”. She highly admired writings and visual art as part of Surrealism and was also direct competition to the highly adored Coco Chanel as they both emerged as prominent figures during the two World Wars. She’s an inspiring and very talented woman; check her out!
